The V-Bombers

Updated: May 24, 2022

The V-Bombers were the RAF’s final heavy bomber squad. The V-Bombers included the Avro Vulcan, the Handley Page Victor, and the Vickers Valiant. First, the Vulcan. As you saw in my other post about the Vulcan, it was the main plane used in the Black Buck Raids on the Falkland Islands, and it was also the best of the trio. It could carry Britain’s first nuclear bomb, the Blue Danube Gravity Bomb. And that bomb was completely massive! Next, the Victor. The biggest of the three bombers, the Handley Page Victor was big, and had a steady speed of about 640mph. And then, the RAF decided to convert the Victors into tankers. Yes, they were perfect for the job! Okay, onto the Vickers Valiant. The most conventional of the trio, the Valiant was also the first. The Valiant could hold 21,000Ib of nuclear weapons. That’s a lot! Well, Vulcans, Victors, and Valiants were all great bombers and most of them were retired from 1965 to 1993. But, the V-Bombers were all fast, big, and powerful. Perfect.

Here's the Vulcan,

the Victor,

and the Valiant.
