Sharing the numbers of one of the most famous planes in history, the Saab B-17 was horrible compared to the B17 Flying Fortress of the USAF. The Saab B-17 was a Swedish reconnaissance dive bomber, having its maiden flight on May 18, 1940. Made to replace the bad-for-its-time Fokker S6 Sesquiplane, the B-17A (first version) had a classic dive-bomber build, with a single Bristol Mercury XII radial engine, two seats, and a long cockpit. But surprisingly enough, no machine gun just poking out the back! Usually a dive bomber would have something like a Browning heavy machine gun of MG15, but there is nothing on this plane. Take a Junkers Ju-87/Stuka dive bomber. That thing has a big MG15 just sticking out of the back. But this thing is a whole new animal. I don’t know about the B-17B, but the B-17C had a machine gun. So much for my rant. Holding up to 1500lbs of bombs, with racks under the wings, this thing could of held up to three bombs, and have easy dives and bombing runs. Here are the dimensions. This thing was 32ft, 10in, and had a wingspan of about 44ft, and 11in. There you go. One more post for my Sweden section, and one post on a random Swedish dive-bomber.
