The Lightning was one of the best interceptor aircraft of the 1960s, and quite an absurd one, if you take a closer look. Made by English Electric first, but later got bought off by BAC, or the British Aircraft Corporation. It was one of the most strange interceptors, and here are some of its features. First of all, it had two jet engines that were stacked on top of one another, and it had swept back wings. When I say sweep wings, I think of the Lightning (or the Sabre! I’ll do a post on the Sabre soon, I promise.) The Lightning was more of an aircraft that you’d think of if I said: ”1960s interceptor”, then an Aircraft that when I say “English Electric Lightning”, you’d think “what's that?”. Cut to the chase, it was a well known interceptor. Now, onto the engines! With two stacked Rolls-Royce Avon Turbojets, this jet could reach supersonic speeds of up to 1,000mph! Wow! The Lightning was mostly used for intercepting, mostly on Tupolev Tu-16s, Tu-22s, and Tu-95s coming in from Russia. Well, the Lightning was truly one of the best interceptors of the jet age. (But you still can’t beat the Draken! See my post on it!).
