B52 Stratofortress

Updated: May 16, 2021

Planned to be retired in 2030, the B52 Stratofortress is a massive plane! Powered by 8 10,000Ib Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojets, this truly enormous plane had a top speed of about 650mph. This bomber served in many conflicts, including the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. And, did you know that the youngest B52s are still active and are 57 years old? Very cool. An average B52 can hold 70,000 pounds of bombs. 70,000! That's a lot! In my opinion, B52 Stratofortresses are some of the biggest, most remarkable planes of the 20-20st centuries. It first flew in 1955, and entered the service in 1957, and has been used in conflicts ever since. I can't believe they still use these things! They're like 66 years old! That’s crazy! Well, the span on this enormous B52 is a whopping 185ft, and the length is 156ft, 6in. Its wingspan is longer than its body! Crazy! Well, there you have it. The big ‘ol B52.
