B17 Flying Fortress

Updated: May 26, 2021

Used in WWII, this 10 seat heavy bomber dropped the most bombs out of any aircraft in WWII from The US! That’s a lot of bombs! This bomber used four 1200 hp Wright R-1820-97 nine-cylinder single-row radial engines, with a maximum speed of about 325. This propeller driven bomber could really pack a punch! Its bomb load was a maximum of about 10,496 Ib. The Germans really didn’t stand a chance. Some were even escorted by the Tuskegee airmen! Amazing! Well, back to the Flying Fortress. The Flying Fortresses brought day bombing to Germany and the RAF bombers brought their bombing by night. All of this bombing is making me sleepy! Their were many different versions of the B17, including: the B17B, the B17C, the B17D, and the B17E, F&G. Well, there you have it. The wing span of this massive plane was 103 ft, 9.38 in, and the length was 74 ft, 9 in. There. That’s the big ‘ol B17.
